Acting Kath CEO Engages Labour Unions, Vows To Tackle Staff Concerns Head-On

The Ag. Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), Dr. (Med.) Paa Kwesi Baidoo, has held a series of separate meetings with executives of various labour unions at the hospital with a pledge to tackle staff members concerns head on during his tenure of office.

The meetings, which formed part of his introductory engagements with key stakeholders were aimed at fostering collaboration and mutual understanding between his management and organized labour at the hospital.

Unions that participated in the engagement included the Komfo Anokye Doctors Association (KADA), Komfo Anokye Pharmacists Association (KAPA), KATH Administrative Workers Association (KATHAWA), and Komfo Anokye Certified Registered Anesthetics (KACRA). The rest were KATH branches of Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), Health Services Workers’ Union (HSWU), Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists (GAMLS) and Health Accounting Staff Association of Ghana (HASAG).

At the meetings, the unions used the opportunity to formally welcome the Ag. CEO and submitted for redress a range of concerns and challenges affecting their respective sectors, including issues of security, recognition of new qualifications, logistics, staff welfare, and working conditions.

In response, the Ag. CEO and his management team acknowledged the concerns raised and provided initial feedback and assurances.

“As a union leader myself before this appointment, I wish to express my personal commitment to working closely with all labour groups at the hospital to address any outstanding challenges in a sustainable and inclusive manner”, he assured.

On the recognition of new qualifications acquired without official endorsement by management, he pledged to get the necessary approvals for the reduction in the amnesty period for the acceptance of such certificates from five years to four years.

The Ag. CEO emphasized the importance of unity, transparency, and cooperation in driving KATH’s vision forward. He further called on all staff to support management’s efforts in improving healthcare delivery at the hospital.

He had earlier met with the Senior Specialists and Consultants at the hospital to court their support to ensure the continuous delivery of quality specialist services to the public.

They made number of suggestions to further enhance the operations of the hospital. Notable among the suggestions was the adoption of Public Private Partnership (PPP) to improve imaging, laboratory and other diagnostic facilities as part of strategies to improve the quality of services to the public.

Dr. (Med.) Baidoo expressed his gratitude and encouraged them to always come to him with any issue that needed immediate attention.

The engagement was described by the unions and the Consultants as timely and positive, setting a hopeful tone for continued dialogue and partnership in furtherance of the growth of the hospital.

Dr. (Med.) Baidoo, a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, assumed office on 5th May, 2025. Until his appointment, he was the Head of Directorate of Trauma and Orthopedics of the hospital and Chairman of the Ashanti Regional division of the Ghana Medical Association.
