KATH Psychiatric Unit Partners Toase Chief To Offer Free Mental Health Screening At Toase

The Psychiatric Unit of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), in partnership with the Markyolos Foundation and OKB Foundation, has organized a free mental health screening exercise at the Toase Chief’s Palace in the Atwima Nwabiagya District.

The event, held over the weekend, forms part of ongoing efforts to promote mental health awareness and early intervention, particularly in rural and peri-urban communities where mental health resources are limited.

The initiative received the full support and endorsement of Nana Yim Awere Ababio, the Toasehene, who also serves as the Director of Finance at KATH. In his address, Nana Yim emphasized the importance of mental wellness and commended the team for bringing vital services closer to the people.

“Mental health is just as important as physical health, yet it is often ignored or stigmatized,” he said. “As a traditional leader and a hospital administrator, I am committed to creating spaces where people can seek help without fear or shame. This initiative is a step in the right direction,” he emphasized.

Residents of Toase and surrounding communities turned out in their numbers to access the free screening, which included psychological evaluations, counseling, and referrals for further treatment where needed. Educational materials were also distributed to raise awareness on common mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, and substance abuse.

Representatives from the Markyolos Foundation and OKB Foundation also expressed their commitment to supporting mental health initiatives across the country, especially those targeting underserved populations.

The organizers indicated that more outreach programs will be rolled out in the coming months to ensure that mental health services reach those who need them most.

The event concluded with a call on government, NGOs, and individuals to invest in mental health infrastructure and education as a national priority.
