Prof. Dr. Dr. Otchere Addai-Mensah has formally assumed duty as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi following his nomination to the position by His Excellency President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and subsequent approval by the Board effective 1st December, 2022.
The new CEO’s substantive appointment was finalised by the KATH Board chaired by Ambassador Nana Effah-Apenteng after he had successfully passed the appointment interview at the Public Services Commission in line with the guidelines on such high profile engagements.
Prof. Addai-Mensah succeeded Dr. Oheneba Owusu-Danso who finally retired from public service on 1st November, 2022 after nearly five and half years in office.
Until his appointment, Prof. Addai-Mensah was an Associate Professor of Haematology, Immunology and Global Health in the Department of Medical Diagnostics, College of Health Sciences of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). He was also the Vice-Dean of Students at the University.
Prof. Addai-Mensah is a trained medical doctor and holds a BSc in Human Biology and an MBChB (General Medicine) from the then School of Medical Sciences of KNUST. He also holds a MSc. in Biomedical Sciences from the University of Westminster in London-UK, and a PhD. in Immunology and Biotechnology from the prestigious RWTH University in Aachen, Germany. He had also completed the taught component of an MBA programme in Strategic Management.
Prof. Addai-Mensah previously worked as a Researcher at the Fraunhofer Institute for Molecular Biology and Applied Ecology in Germany, and as a Resident in the Department of Pathology at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi. He was a member of the board of the Nursing and Midwifery Council Ghana and National Vice President of the University Teachers Association (UTAG-KNUST and Ghana). He is a member of both the British Society of Immunology and the Ghana Medical Association (GMA).
Prof. Addai-Mensah has extensive experience in scientific research and general management, and has a number of publications in reputable journals to his credit. His research interests are in Infectious Diseases, Malariology, Biomedical Sciences, Immuno-epidemiology, Haematology, Immunology, Transfusion Medicine and Public Health.
At various meetings with stakeholders since his assumption of office, Prof. Addai-Mensah, re-echoed that his vision is to transform KATH into a resilient and most patient-centric tertiary facility in Ghana. He said he hopes to achieve this through the provision of impactful leadership that prioritizes the needs of patients, staff supervision, discipline and motivation.
Another strategy for achieving the above vision, he emphasised, is to embark on aggressive renovation, expansion and upgrading of infrastructure to create conducive environment for optimal specialist patient care. This will be realised through the judicious use of Internally Generated Fund (IGF) and forging strategic networking and partnership with the private sector, he stressed.
Prof. Addai-Mensah has, consequently, appealed to all stakeholders to regard this as a collective vision and contribute their quota to reposition the hospital as the most preferred tertiary healthcare provider in Ghana.
Mr. Fred Effah-Yeboah is the Director of Administration of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).
He holds Masters of Public Administration and Bsc. Administration (Health Service Management) from University of Ghana, Legon, and Masters in Development Management from the University of Development Studies.
His rich experience and leadership skills in health care management have over the years contributed in promoting quality health care delivery to the people of Ghana.
He is a member of the Development Studies Association, UK, Institute of Directors and the Association of Health Service Administrators, Ghana.
Prior to his appointment, he was the Area Manager of the Bawku Presbyterian Health Services in the Northern Region of Ghana.
Mr. Elvis Kusi is the Director of Finance of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).
He is the Omanhene of Toase with the Stool name, Nana Yim Awere Ababio.
He has a rich experience and expertise in financial and strategic planning, budget and development management, accounting and financial operations and assert risk management as well as investment and system improvement management.
He is a member of several professional bodies including America Institute of Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA), Institute of Public Finance Accountancy (CIPFA) as well as the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) Ghana.
He is a Chartered Accountant and hold Masters in Business Administration and Masters in Law (LLM) in international Business from Emporia State University, USA and University of Cumbria, Carliste, UK respectively.
He also holds Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in Economics and Accounting.
He is a product of Opoku Ware School (OWASS).
Anthony Kofi Oduro (Rev.), affectionately called Pastor Tony, was appointed by the KATH Board in December 2020 as the first Director of Human Resource Management of the hospital after the elevation of that position from a deputy director status. Prior to his appointment, he was the first Ag. Director of Human Resource Management at the Ho Teaching Hospital (HTH) where he spearheaded the development of systems and structures of the Human Resource (HR) Directorate of that institution following its elevation from a regional hospital to a teaching hospital status. Before his posting to HTH, he had risen through the ranks from Assistant HR Manager through to Deputy Chief HR Manager at KATH HR Unit. He is an HR expert with over 17 years of experience in the public sector and has also provided consultancy services to a number of private organizations.
Rev. Oduro holds a Master of Business Administration (HR option) from the University of Ghana Business School, Diploma in HRM from Galilee International Management Institute (Israel), and a Bachelor’s Degree from the Univer sity of Ghana. In addition, he holds a Diploma in Theology from the Assemblies of God Theological Seminary (Ghana). He is a member of Chartered Institute of Human Resource Management, Ghana. He was the chairman of Health Services Workers’ Union (HSWU) – KATH branch from 2016 to 2020. He has served in various capacities on KATH and national committees.
Dr. Kwadwo Sarbeng is a product of the School of Medical Sciences (now School of Medicine and Dentistry) of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi, where he obtained his MBChB degree. He trained as a house officer and was employed as a medical officer at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, Kumasi. Dr. Sarbeng got his membership in general Obstetrics and Gynaecology (OBGY) with the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons, and successfully pursued his Fellowship in Reproductive Health and Family Planning.
He also has a Master of Public Health degree from KNUST. Dr. Sarbeng has served as a consultant to many district hospitals, Ghana Health Service (GHS), Christian Health Association of Ghana (CHAG) and women’s health agencies as a trainer and service provider. He is generally interested in improving women’s health and reducing maternal mortality through research. Dr. Sarbeng is a teacher at different levels of medical education. He is a part-time lecturer at KNUST School of Medicine and Dentistry, and a trainer in OBGYN for the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons. Until his appointment as Medical Director, he was the Head of Family Planning and Reproductive Health Unit, Head of Research and Deputy Director at the Research and Development Unit of the Hospital. He serves on the National Blood Service Board and on various research regulatory bodies. Dr. Kwadwo Sarbeng is a reviewer of a number of medical journals.
Ing. George Boadu was appointed on 1st July, 2022 as the first Director of General Services in Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH). Prior to his appointment, Ing. Boadu was a Deputy Chief Biomedical Engineer at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital. He has over 18 years working experience in the medical device and health care space, with exceptional leadership and technical competencies in the design and development of medical devices. He holds a Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) degree in Operations Management, Bachelor of Engineering (B.E) in Biomedical Engineering and Higher National Diploma (HND) in Mechanical Engineering from University of Ghana, All Nations University College and Cape Coast Technical University respectively. He also obtained a Postgraduate certificate in Occupational Health, Safety and Environmental Management from the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA). Ing. Boadu has authored and presented several articles on clinical engineering at both local and international conferences.
Pharm. Kwaku Sarfo is a distinguished pharmacist with over 28 years working experience in pharmaceutical practice. He holds a Bachelor of Pharmacy degree and Master of Science in Health Services Planning and Management from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi. He has held several managerial portfolios in KATH Pharmacy Division and until his appointment as the Director of Pharmacy, KATH, he was a Chief Pharmacist and Head of Medicines Management Unit of the hospital. Pharm. Sarfo is a member of the Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana (PSGH) and was its Financial Secretary for the Ashanti Region branch from 1995 to 1998. He is the chairman of the Drugs and Therapeutics Committee of the hospital. He has authored and presented a number of research papers at both local and international conferences.
Ms. Georgina Afua Sam is the Director of Nursing and Midwifery Services at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).
She holds a Master’s in Public Health, Post Graduate Diploma in Education and Bachelor of Nursing with Psychology from University of Cape Coast and University of Ghana and Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology respectively.
She is a Nurse, Midwife and has a rich experience in Public Health, Nursing administration and leadership and has served in different capacities at various health facilities in Ghana.
She is a member of the West African College of Nursing and a Foundation Fellow of the Ghana College of Nurses and Midwives.
Until her appointment, she was the Regional Officer of the Nursing and Midwifery Council in the Brong Ahafo Region, a position she held since May, 2012.
