President Akuffo-Addo Expresses Satisfaction with the Progress of Work on the New 138.5 Euro Maternity And
PRESIDENT AKUFFO-ADDO EXPRESSES SATISFACTION WITH THE PROGRESS OF WORK ON THE NEW 138.5 EURO MATERNITY AND CHILDREN’S BLOCK PROJECT AT KATH
His Excellency, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has expressed deep contentment with the progress of work on the ongoing re-construction and modernisation of the Maternity and Children’s block project at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi.
He said the 138.5 million Euro project, which encompassed the complete demolition of the old structure and construction of a new 506-bed block and was currently at about 60 percent completion rate, demonstrates his government’s commitment to the modernisation and expansion of specialist healthcare services in the country.
Nana Akuffo-Addo stated this during an inspection visit to the project site on Monday, 17th October 2022, as part of his four-day working tour to the Ashanti Region.
Briefing the President on the project, the lead consultant for Archito Consult, Nana Abu-Bonsra, said upon completion the eight-floor block will boast of 22 consulting rooms, three group consulting rooms and two consulting rooms for adult emergencies, plus two consulting rooms for paediatric emergencies, three auditoriums, and five seminar rooms. Of the 506 beds, 199 will constitute paediatric cots, 136 paediatric beds, 19 birthing beds and 152 adult beds.
The facility will also boast of an intensive care unit, a high dependency unit, isolation rooms and student lecture halls and catering facilities for staff, patients and students.
Nana Abu-Bonsra gave the assurance that with the pace of progress of work, there was every assurance that the project will be completed in 2024 as scheduled.
The project initially commenced on Friday, 15th May 2020, when the President cut the sod for the re-activation and completion of work on the then 800-bed Maternity and Children’s block project which was started in 1976 but got stalled several times due to funding challenges.
Based on a structural integrity report the government decided to revise the scope of works in November 2020 to include a complete demolition of the old structure and design, construct and equip a new 506-bed modern maternal and child health facility to replace the old one.
