Hearts of Gold: 284 points of blood donated to celebrate Pastor Ransford Obeng’s 70th birthday

In a touching display of compassion and community spirit, the Transfusion Medicine Unit of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in collaboration with Calvary Charismatic Center (CCC) has successfully organised a well-attended blood donation drive to commemorate the 70th birthday of Pastor Ransford Obeng, founder and head pastor of the church.

The event, which formed part of Pastor Obeng’s long-standing annual blood donation initiative, was held under the powerful message, “Your donation can save lives”. An impressive 284 pints of blood was donated during the exercise. This significant volume is expected to provide critical support to patients requiring transfusions in hospitals across the Ashanti Region and beyond.

Pastor Obeng revealed that the blood donation exercise has become an important tradition of the church and the foundation of the initiative has been his lifelong theme of stewardship.

The renowned Reverend Minister seized the opportunity to address some misconceptions surrounding blood donation. He acknowledged that some people fear donating blood because they mistakenly believe it may be used for rituals or sacrifices.
“I want to assure everyone that there is no need to be afraid. These blood donation exercises are organized in partnership with a government hospital, and every unit of blood collected is used to save lives. Blood donation is a noble act that benefits patients who desperately need it,” he emphasized.

Pastor Ransford Obeng, visibly moved by the support, expressed deep gratitude to all donors. “Today is not just about my 70th birthday, but about giving life to others. I am overwhelmed by your love and selflessness. Let us continue to be our brother’s keeper through this noble cause,” he stated.

In her address, Dr. Shirley Phyllis Ohenewa Owusu-Ofori, Acting Chief Executive Officer of the National Blood Service, and a renowned Consultant in Transfusion Medicine, commended the large turnout and emphasised the critical need for regular voluntary blood donation.

“Every pint collected today brings us closer to saving lives in our hospitals. Blood donation is safe, simple, and one of the greatest acts of kindness one can offer,” she said.

The blood drive blended celebration with purpose, turning Pastor Obeng’s 70th birthday milestone into a powerful platform for humanitarian impact. Organisers emphasised the campaign slogan “One donation, many lives,” reminding everyone that a single pint of blood can make the difference between life and death for accident victims, expectant mothers, surgical patients, and those battling chronic illnesses.

Participants left with a deep sense of fulfilment, knowing that they had not only honoured Pastor Obeng on his special day but had also become real-life heroes by giving the priceless gift of blood.
