Africa Eye Imaging Center in Collaboration with Zero Blind Babies Donates Critical Neonatal Equipment to KATH — JULY 28, 2025
As their contribution towards improving neonatal care, Non-governmental Organisations (NGOs) Africa Eye Imaging Center, Ghana and Zero Blind Babies USA, have come together to donate assorted medical devices to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).
The devices, made up of 15 Pumani bubble Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP), 10 Vayu bubble CPAP, 20 LifeBox pulse oximeters and 20 neonatal probes, valued at Sixty Seven Thousand Dollars ($67,000) are expected to enhance the hospital’s capacity to provide quality respiratory support and monitoring for premature and critically ill newborns. The CPAP devices are vital in assisting babies with underdeveloped lungs to breathe more effectively. The pulse oximeters and neonatal probes on the other hand will enable accurate monitoring of oxygen levels, which is crucial in neonatal intensive care.
The CEO of Africa Eye Imaging Center, Dr. Akwasi Ahmed Agyeman, noted that the gesture aligned with the center’s commitment to supporting healthcare delivery in Ghana. He said over 3,000 babies have been screened over the years particularly in areas that directly affect infant survival and maternal health. He encouraged other private entities and philanthropists to collaborate with healthcare institutions in strengthening Ghana’s health system for future generations.
Receiving the donation on behalf of KATH, Dr. Boateng Nimako, Head of Quality Assurance Unit, expressed deep appreciation for the generous support and noted that it had come at a critical time when the unit was seeing increasing numbers of admissions and a greater need for specialised care.
“These devices will go a long way in reducing infant mortality and improving outcomes for our most vulnerable patients,” he remarked.
The Head of NICU at KATH, Dr. Naana Wireko Brobbey expressed heartfelt appreciation to the Centre for the donation. She noted that the equipment would go a long way to improve the quality of care for preterm and critically ill newborns.
“This donation could not have come at a better time. It enhances our ability to provide safe and effective respiratory support, especially for babies who are unable to breathe on their own after birth,” she asserted.
Ghana Medical Association Pays Courtesy Call on CEO of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital — JULY 28, 2025
A high-powered delegation from the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), led by the General Secretary, Dr (Dent), Richard Selormey, has paid a courtesy call on the Ag. Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), Dr. (Med) Paa Kwesi Baidoo, to congratulate him on his appointment and to discuss key issues concerning the health sector.
Dr. (Med) Baidoo, was the Chaiman of the Ashanti Regional Division of the GMA before his current appointment.
The meeting witnessed the discussion of various issues centered on deepening institutional collaboration, improving the working conditions of medical professionals and promoting patient-centered care. One major concern was the non-availability of a CATH Lab at the hospital which led to the recent loss of one their colleagues.
Dr. (Med) Baidoo, welcomed the delegation and expressed gratitude for the visit. He reaffirmed the hospital’s commitment to partnering with the GMA to address challenges facing the health sector, particularly in the areas of resource allocation, staff welfare, and clinical governance.
Touching on the CATH Lab, he informed the team of his meeting with the Governor of Bank of Ghana for support to acquire one, adding that it was regrettable that such an essential cardiac equipment was missing from the hospital’s stock of facilities. He said the assurance from the Governor during his meeting was that the bank will help the hospital get one.
KATH CEO COURTS BANK OF GHANA FOR SUPPORT — JULY 23, 2025
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital KATH, Dr. (Med) Paa Kwesi Baidoo, has met the Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BOG), Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiama, and his management to court support for the retooling of the hospital.
The meeting, held at the headquarters of the bank in Accra, formed part of the sustained efforts by the KATH CEO to seek state and corporate funding for addressing some of the equipment and infrastructure deficit challenges facing the hospital.
KATH occupies a unique position in the health care delivery system of the country as it receives referrals from 12 out of 16 regions by virtue of its strategic location and wide range of specialist services.
Regrettably, in spite of its highly skilled workforce and the huge demand for its services, it lacks the requisite stock of equipment and other infrastructure required for the comprehensive provision of specialist and sub-specialist care to the public hence the drive by the CEO to reach out to corporate Ghana for support.
Dr. (Med) Baidoo told the meeting which had in attendance the two Deputy Governors of the bank and some other senior management that the obsolete nature of some of the existing equipment and the absence of other critical ones were impeding the delivery of cutting-edge clinical services to the public.
“Currently, most of the critical equipment such as C.T. scans, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Fluoroscopy, Oxygen Plants and Central Sterilisation equipment at the hospital are either down or working at fault. Vital equipment like a Catheterisation Laboratory (CATHLAB) and Mammogram are not even available at all”, he noted.
He said given that the state did not have the budget to fully address the above challenges, it would not be out of place if corporate entities like the BoG assisted with funding to procure such vital life-saving equipment to enable the hospital provide the best of specialist services to the public.
Dr. Asiama acknowledged that health facilities like KATH which were providing critical services to the public deserved to be supported and the appeal made by its CEO would be seriously considered.
He said the management of the bank would study the list of the critically needed equipment submitted by the CEO and take a firm decision on what to do as soon as possible so that the hospital could be supported to serve the public better.
