Construction Work on the Cardiac Interventional Centre at KATH Under MahamaCares Progresses
The drive to strengthen specialist cardiac services at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) is gaining momentum following the steady progress being made on the construction of the Catheterization Laboratory (CATHLAB) and Cardiac Interventional Centre currently ongoing at the hospital under the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (GMTF).
Barely a month after work commenced on the project, work on the foundation of the three-storey building is almost completed to allow for the commencement of the construction of the super structure.
This was revealed during a special visit paid to the project site by Madam Obuobia Darko Opoku, the Administrator of the GMTF, also known as MahamaCares, to inspect the progress of work.
Madam Obuobia and her team accompanied by members of the management of the hospital were briefed and taken round the site by the Project Engineer, Mr. Abraham Kofi Boateng Fiscian, who noted that the original design envisaged for the project was a one-storey structure. He, however, pointed out that following extensive consultations with the hospital and its specialist doctors, it has been expanded to a three-storey building.
Mr. Fiscian observed that this strategic expansion reflects a forward-looking approach to infrastructure development which would ensure that the space was optimized and efficiently utilized to meet growing demand for advanced cardiac services.
He said technical meetings have been instituted to ensure regular engagements between the project engineers and that of KATH to ensure the seamless execution of the project.
Madam Obuobia expressed her satisfaction with the pace and quality of work observed on site, noting that the project is advancing in line with agreed timelines.
She was also very happy about the coordinated planning and collaboration between KATH and the contractor stressing that this was going to help deliver a facility which is fit for purpose upon completion.
Mr. Fred Effah-Yeboah, Director of Administration, together with some management of KATH who received the delegation on behalf of the Chief Executive Officer, Dr. (Med) Paa Kwesi Baidoo, appreciated the commitment from the leadership of MahamaCares and reaffirmed the hospital’s steadfast commitment to the successful completion of the project.
Once operational, the facility is expected to significantly enhance KATH’s capacity to deliver advanced cardiac diagnostic and interventional services, reduce referrals, and further solidify the hospital’s role as a leading centre for sub-specialist care in Ghana and beyond.
