‘MahamaCares’ Administrator Hails KATH Leadership for Exemplary Dedication Amid Equipment and other resource constraints
Adjoa Obuobia Darko-Opoku, the Administrator of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (MahamaCares), has lauded the management of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) for its “outstanding commitment” to patient care, even as the facility grapples with severe equipment and other resource constraints.
“Having undertaken an extensive tour of this hospital with my team, I am truly impressed by the depth of specialist services that are being provided to the public in spite of severe resource challenges.
“The Fund is prepared to support management to address these challenges under the MahamaCares initiative so that it can further enhance its specialist services to patients”, she emphasized.
Madam Darko-Opoku stated this after paying a working visit to the hospital as part of her nationwide assessment tour of all the 10 regional hospitals and five teaching hospitals in the country yesterday.
After a candid boardroom discussion on the hospital’s output and operational challenges, the hospital’s management led by Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dr. (Med) Paa Kwesi Baidoo, led the Administrator and her team to undertake a detailed tour of some of the critical areas of the hospital including the Dialysis Unit, Radiology, and Oncology Directorates.
At the Radiology Directorate, the glaring gaps and absence of some critical imaging equipment came to the fore with the disclosure that all the C.T. scanners, ultrasound, X-Ray and the Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) equipment were either broken down or working at fault. In addition, there were no Mammogram and Catheterization Lab (CATHLAB) at all at the hospital.
There were similar stories of constraints at the dialysis, adult and paediatric oncology sections of the hospital that were visited.
“This hospital serves as a lifeline for millions and it is heartwarming to note that you have turned scarcity into survival stories through sheer innovation and dedication and I wish to commend the management for the exemplary commitment.
“I pledge to fast-track funding for these essentials C.T. scans, mammograms, CATH LABs, and other equipment that you need to deliver as a hospital under the “MahamaCares” initiative,” Darko-Opoku pledged.”
She consequently directed the management of the hospital to immediately submit the list of all the essential equipment urgently needed to improve the delivery of specialist services to her outfit for consideration.
Dr. (Med) Baidoo expressed gratitude to the Administrator for the visit and the pledge of support noting that the “visit reaffirms that we are not alone in this fight and that with partners like MahamaCares, we can enhance the capacity of this hospital to provide better care to the public”.
Launched by President John Dramani Mahama in April 2025, MahamaCares targets non-communicable diseases like cancer and kidney failure, filling the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) gaps via an independent trust.
