KATH Exceeds 2025 Targets amid Challenges, Unveils Ambitious Expansion Plans as It Marks 70 Years

The Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) has recorded appreciable performance in 2025, exceeding key targets in specialist outpatient visits, emergency cases, and surgeries despite nationwide industrial actions and technical setbacks.

Addressing the hospital’s End-of-Year Performance Review Conference under the theme “KATH @70: Advancing Tertiary Healthcare on the Pillars of Research, Customer-Centric Care and Clinical Mentorship,” the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the hospital Dr (Med) Paa Kwesi Baidoo described the year as challenging yet highly productive.

He noted that Specialist Out-Patient Department (OPD) cases reached 284,225, exceeding the target of 273,144 by four percent. Emergency attendance stood at 26,581 against a target of 25,000, representing a six percent increase, while surgeries recorded 18,380 cases, six percent above the target of 17,268. Radiotherapy, laboratory and physiotherapy services also marginally exceeded their targets. Institutional deaths, he added, reduced by 16 percent compared to 2024.

Dr. ( Med.) Baidoo highlighted major investments made through Internally Generated Funds ( IGF), including the procurement of assorted equipment such as Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds, patient monitors and Electrocardiogram (ECG) machines valued at over GH¢10 million. He said the hospital had repaired and operationalised its two 132-slice CT scan machines and completed the comprehensive renovation of the Main Dialysis Centre, bringing the total number of dialysis facilities at KATH to three.
On staff welfare, the CEO announced that responsibility allowances for all line managers had been increased by 100 percent. He disclosed that nearly 90 percent of 376 staff applications for further studies were approved, while GH¢4.3 million was spent on free medical care for staff members and their immediate families. Additionally, 300 staff members graduated from a certificate course in professional communication and record keeping in collaboration with the University of Media, Arts and Communication (UniMAC), which contributed to patient satisfaction improving from 85.5 percent in 2024 to 91.2 percent in 2025.
Dr. Baidoo further announced that the Board had approved the hospital’s 2025-2029 Strategic Plan and signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Mayo Clinic, designating KATH as the Africa centre for the Mayo Clinic Global Health Programme.
Looking to the future, the CEO said work had already commenced on the construction of a state-of-the-art Catheterization Laboratory and Cardiac Interventional Centre under the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (MahamaCares), with completion expected by the third quarter. He added that steps were underway to complete the Assisted Reproductive Technology Centre and the 192-bed Patients Relatives Hostel.
Dr. (Med.) Baidoo disclosed that work would soon begin on a multi-purpose auditorium with a 100-bed visitors’ hostel, sponsored by the Church of Pentecost, while discussions had advanced with the Jospong Group of Companies for the construction of a new Oncology Centre. He also mentioned plans to acquire a state-of-the-art mammogram machine through the City Cancer Challenge (C/CAN) and Amgen, which would be the first in about 15 years.
He announced the roll out of Clinical Mentorship Programme to support lower-tier hospitals in the Ashanti Region and beyond.
Board Chairman of the hospital Nana Prof. Oheneba Boachie-Adjei Woahene II, who chaired the programme, commended management and staff for their resilience and hard work. He reaffirmed the Board’s commitment to supporting management in prioritising efficiency, accountability and sustainability.
The Guest Speaker, Prof. David Asamoah, Pro Vice-Chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), emphasised the importance of empathy, communication and respect for quality patient experience.
Solidarity messages were delivered by several dignitaries, including CEOs from sister teaching hospitals, Dr. Hafez Adam of the Ministry of Health, Dr. Fred Adomako-Boateng, Ashanti Regional Director of the Ghana Health Service, and Hon. Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi, Chief Executive of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly.
Hon. Boadi called for compassionate and careful treatment of patients and announced plans by the Assembly to support the expansion of KATH’s Breast Care Centre through the construction of a new building.
